Junktoberfest 2013 0 comments

Nov 6, 2013 | , ,
All loaded up!

Here we are all set up and ready to go. A mob of crazy women was lingering just outside the door. We had just taken bets on what would be the first to go. I put my money on the ladder + crows…

If you look really closely, you can see a tear in Mary’s eye. Oh, why, Oh, why, will nobody buy, will nobody buy, the ladder and crows?!? She blows her nose. Who really knows, why someone bought those, but nobody chose, the ladder and crows.
Our new friend back there. She gave us lots and lots and lots of good advice. And then she gave us the eye for not charging more on some of our stuff.

Pa waving good-bye. See ya later McCook! It’s been fun!

Fortune foretells of treasure in metal junk 0 comments

Jun 3, 2013 | , ,

I had my fortune told during our family vacation in Branson a couple of weeks ago and it said not once, not twice, but three times I would find treasure at a garage sale, flea market or in a dusty old attic. It said to look specifically for objects of metal. I must have taken it to heart because it seems that almost everything I came home with from Saturday’s garage sales was made of metal. Did I really think there was a hidden money compartment in that old bread pan? No, not really. But it was fun thinking about it for a while.

I found a couple of old passports for 25¢. I didn’t really stop to look at them at the time, but simply grabbed them and left. I didn’t know what was inside, but I knew I was intrigued. Abigail and I sat down and thumbed through them this morning. Turns out they were issued during the time of the Vietnam War, in the late 60s. This guy, who the passports belonged to, was allowed in and out of Vietnam during a time when travel was restricted to the country. Government agent? Defense? Military? Don’t know. Either way, for 25¢, they were a cool find.

Camping Treasure Map 0 comments

Sep 12, 2012 | ,
A couple of weeks ago when we were on our camping trip, I got the chance to do a little Treasure Hunt for the kids. This was no ordinary treasure hunt — this was a hunt for some homemade ice cream!
The map and clues were made ahead of time using nothing more than a brown paper bag and some basic art supplies. Using a satellite image of the campground as a guide, I hand-drew the map using a fine-point Sharpie. I added some color using tray watercolors, then burned the edges of the paper using a lighter to give it an antique/treasure map feel. I waited until we got to the campsite before I added any details, including trees, small buildings and the ‘Xs.’

When the time finally came, it wasn’t too hard to hide the map — they had been digging in the river bank all day trying to tunnel out a cavern. So when they weren’t looking, I simply buried the bottle nearby…and waited for them to discover it.

The clue locations were marked on the treasure map with an ‘X.’ Each of the 7 numbered clues included the name of just one ingredient needed to make the ice cream. After all 7 clues were found, the pieces had to be put together like a puzzle. I let them tape the pieces together once they got it figured out. The directions to make the ice cream were cleverly written on the back side of the clues. The kids weren’t able to read all of the directions until the all clues were found and the puzzle put together.

I had everything set up and ready to go for when they returned with the ingredients and directions. They were each able to make their own bag of vanilla ice cream!

Ice Cream in a Bag
1 gallon Ziploc bag
1 pint Ziploc bag
ice
6 tablespoons rock salt
1 cup milk or half & half
2 tablespoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon vanilla

How:
  1. Fill large plastic bag halfway with ice. Add rock salt.
  2. Fill the small plastic bag with milk, sugar and vanilla. Seal the bag.
  3. Put small bag inside of large bag. Seal carefully.
  4. Shake for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Wipe salt and ice off top of small bag. Open carefully and enjoy. Aaarrgh!

Check out the photos from our Labor Day weekend float trip. We tubed and tanked down the Cedar River. And enjoyed luxury accommodations at the Lake Ericson primitive camping site. { See photo of Emma running away from outhouse. }
